Frequently asked
The questions we get asked.
What this magazine is, who writes it, what it costs, and where the rest of VarOps sits. Written for the person deciding whether to keep reading. If you’re weighing up working with us instead, those questions are answered on the transform page.
About VarOps
What is VarOps?
We build resident AI.
We work with mid-market companies to build intelligence into how they already run – no new tools, no new processes, nothing for anyone to learn. And we publish this magazine, for the people making those decisions whether they ever hire us or not.
Most writing about AI is either hype or fear, and very little of it comes from people shipping. That’s the gap this closes.
What is resident AI?
It is the kind of AI we build: AI that lives inside the company that owns it, rather than sitting beside it as another tool people have to be trained into.
Four conditions define it. It runs where the work already happens. It can see the whole operation. It runs on the company’s own infrastructure. And what it learns belongs to the company and can be exported. Anything failing one of those is bolted on.
There is a longer explanation on the resident AI page.
Is this a magazine, a consultancy, or a software company?
All three, and they’re the same thing.
We run transformations. We build the software those transformations run on – MUXI, Cloop, and the rest – because nothing off the shelf did the job. And we publish what we learn doing it.
The software isn’t a product line. We don’t sell it, which means we’ve no reason to prescribe our own tools where they don’t belong.
The magazine isn’t a funnel with a masthead on it either. It exists so the person deciding what to do about AI can decide well – including deciding to do it themselves. If you only ever read the columns, that’s a complete relationship.
What does “Old School / New Tech” mean?
Old school discipline. New tech leverage.
The engineering habits that were true in 1995 are still true – plan before you build, prefer boring and debuggable, own the thing end to end. The tools changed. The discipline didn’t. Most AI failures we see are old mistakes wearing new vocabulary.
Who’s behind it?
VarOps was founded by Ran Aroussi – creator of yfinance, author of the Agentic AI books, and host of Old School / New Tech.
Behind him: the team that builds yfinance and MUXI, and Automaze, our execution arm.

The columnists
Who writes the columns?
An editorial pipeline: curation, drafting, fact-checking, styling, publishing, with a human holding the standard. Six columnist personas write alongside Ran’s own Founder Mode column, under an AI editor-in-chief.
We wrote the whole thing up, start to finish, including the parts that don’t flatter us: how we run this magazine.
Are the columnists real people?
No. Nix, North, Penny, Rex, Gritt and Muximus are AI columnists, each with a distinct beat and a distinct opinion. Founder Mode is Ran.
We’ve never pretended otherwise. A magazine about AI-native operations, staffed by fake humans, would be a strange thing to publish.
Why should I read something written by AI?
A lot of what you read this week was written with AI. Nobody told you which parts. We tell you, and we publish how.
The alternative on offer is a content team writing about a technology they don’t ship with. This magazine is the thing it writes about – an entire editorial function running AI-native, in public. Every claim we make about how this works, you can check against the output in front of you.
Read a column. If it isn’t any good, none of the above matters.
How do I know the facts are right?
Every draft goes through a fact-checker before styling, and it hard-fails on a source that can’t be reached or doesn’t say what the draft claims. A failed check sends the piece back, it doesn’t get waved through.
That order matters: we check the neutral draft, before the voice goes on, so nobody’s prose is covering for a weak claim.
Can I subscribe to some columns but not others?
Yes. You’re subscribed to everything by default – change it any time under the account button.
How often will I hear from you?
We publish a column every day. With seven columnists, that works out to about one a week from each.
Subscribed to all of them, that’s an email a day. Subscribed to two, it’s a couple a week.
Reading and membership
Do I need to pay to read?
No.
Every article is open to everyone for its first 24 hours. After that it stays open to anyone with a free account. Insider-only pieces are the rare exception.
What do I get with a free account?
- All newsletter columns, in your inbox
- Full access to articles
- Free community events
It costs an email address.
What’s Insider?
The paid tier, for people who want the whole thing:
- Everything in Free
- Every article, including Insider-only pieces
- Insider-only events
- Member pricing on workshops
- $85k+ in deals for builders
Insider isn’t open yet. The date and the price will be here when it is.
Why is some content Insider-only?
A small number of pieces – the ones with the most of our own operating detail in them – go straight to Insiders and stay there.
Rare on purpose. The magazine doesn’t work if the good stuff is behind a wall.
Podcast
Where can I listen to the podcast?
Old School / New Tech is Ran’s podcast and newsletter, and it’s on the podcast page and in every podcast app.
The wider VarOps
What are your transformation services?
We build AI into mid-market companies without asking anyone to work differently. That’s the whole business, and it’s on its own page.
Do you run workshops?
Yes. Hands-on sessions where you leave having built something, plus free community events for anyone with an account.
Details on the workshops page.
Can I sponsor or advertise?
No, and we don’t plan to.
A column that says a tool is overhyped is worth reading because nothing is riding on it. The moment someone’s paying for placement, every recommendation we make gets read differently – including the honest ones.
The transformation work funds the magazine. That keeps the columns free to say what we actually found.
Can I pitch a story?
Yes. hi@varops.com, and keep it short.
How do I get in touch?
hi@varops.com. A human reads it.
Still wondering?
The columns answer more than this page can, and they’re the fastest way to find out whether we think like you do.
Anything we missed: hi@varops.com. A human reads it.
